‘Not for self but for all’

Throughout most of its history Camden London Borough Council has been controlled outright by the Labour Party. It has a long and proud socialist ethos, placing great importance on inclusivity and protecting public services. Its motto is ‘not for self but for all’.

As part of our on-going work designing the wayfinding scheme for Camden Town Hall we have developed visual flourishes, which includes having the Council motto carved into the main entrance steps. Visitors attending weddings, civil ceremonies or indeed Council meetings will literally pass over the motto on entering the building.

We are planning to commission artist Philip Surey to undertake the stone carving having worked with him previously on projects which include Tate Britain and the Vajrasana Retreat Centre. Philip has worked on several high profile projects, possibly most notably the repainting the name on HMS Victory in Portsmouth using an English vernacular font… one that Nelson himself would have recognised!
