As part of the research and design for the wayfinding system for the new National Cathedral we have been in Accra to understand the history, culture and visual languages of Ghana and its people. Along with surveying the site and undertaking key workshops, the team spent several days visiting local artists and makers to learn about traditional craft and hand making processes.
Working closely with Adjaye Architects and Why Not Associates the design concept is for a building where religion, democracy and local tradition are seamlessly and symbolically intertwined.
Serving as a place of worship and a community hub, the Cathedral will contain a series of chapels, a baptistery, a 5,000-seat auditorium, a music school, art gallery, and Africa’s first bible museum. The Cathedral will be set within 5.5 hectares of landscaped gardens.
