On Saturday, Ian headed along to the launch of a brilliant little book celebrating Margate’s heritage typography by local signwriter Andrew Hudson, founder of the Hermetic Sign Company.
Andrew’s passion for letterforms is on every page. Created to mark 10 years of Hermetic Sign Company and five years in his Margate shop and studio, the book is both a love letter to the town’s typographic history and a reminder that good signage is worth looking up for. And chances are you will have seen his work on the big screen without realising, as he is regularly called upon to do work for the movies.
Ian couldn’t resist and returned to the studio with a couple of copies tucked under his arm.
When we first moved to Margate, Andrew crafted the number for the outside of our studio. It’s sadly disappeared beneath a fresh coat of paint since we moved to Hawley Square, but that’s the thing about Andrew’s work – you’re never more than a stone’s throw from another beautifully made sign somewhere around the town.
Congratulations, Andrew. Here’s to the next decade of keeping Margate looking just that little bit better, one letter at a time.
