London City Island

Beacon boat red

A beacon boat is a bit like a lighthouse in that it’s used to guide shipping away from danger.

The danger on the Thames was mostly from other shipping. It’s hard to imagine now but 83,000 people worked in the London Docklands before the development of massive container ships and container ports on the coast.

When we worked on London City Island (a jewel of a place in Docklands that’s now home to the English National Ballet and the London Film School) there was, of course, only one shade of red that could possibly belong there – beacon boat red.
