museum labels

Tate Britain

Paintings speak louder than words

That was our intention in designing what are called Museum Labels. You might know them as gallery texts or wall panels next to artwork or artefacts.

The hanging of gallery rooms matters so much. We wanted to do everything we could to support the intention of the curators. Visitors appreciate the information on the Museum Labels, they will seek the information out when they want to. That gave us a clue to thinking about the labels as not needing to shout their presence.

We selected background tones for the labels that matched exactly the shades the gallery walls were painted. The labels belong, but they belong quietly.
